A 63-year-old Stanwood man suffered serious head injuries when he was hit by an Amtrak train while trying to cross the tracks at the 8600 block of 271st Street Northwest in Stanwood just before 9:30 a.m. Monday, Stanwood police said.
Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said there were 49 passengers on the train, traveling southbound from Bellingham to Portland. No one on board was injured. The train was delayed about 90 minutes.
Graham said it is unclear why the man was on the tracks. The accident was near a signal crossing and the gates were down, she said.
Stanwood is northwest of Everett, on state Route 532.
The man was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital. Stanwood police and Snohomish County Sheriff's detectives are investigating the collision.
