A 16-year-old boy surrendered to Federal Way police Monday afternoon in connection with the shooting of two other teenagers Sunday after a brawl at an abandoned Federal Way gas station.
The suspect came to the Federal Way police station shortly before 5 p.m., was interviewed by detectives and booked into King County Jail Monday evening, police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said.
The victims, both 16, were taken to Harborview Medical Center after the shooting, where police said they were treated and released. One was shot in the shoulder and the other in the back.
The shooting happened at about 3:45 p.m. Sunday near Military Road South and South 288th Street, police reported, with motorists in nearby traffic caught in the crossfire.
The teen who surrendered just before 5 p.m. Monday has a criminal record that includes convictions for reckless endangerment, second-degree assault and a firearms violation.
Schrock said the fight, involving between 10 and 15 boys, took place on the vacant gas station's lot, which is flanked by apartment complexes.
At some point during the melee, four or five gunshots rang out and everyone scattered, she said. But officers, alerted by witnesses reporting the fight, already were en route.
They arrived in time to contact several witnesses, who gave descriptions of the 16-year-old suspect.
Schrock said there was no indication the fight was gang-related, though police have yet to determine the motive for the brawl or the shooting.
