Zoo holds contest to name baby gorilla

By KATHY MULADY
P-I REPORTER

A baby gorilla born at Woodland Park Zoo in October needs a name.

The Zoo is holding a contest to find just the right name for the youngster, who is fully recovered from recent surgery to remove a growth near her spine.

Finding the right name will take some research.

For years the Zoo has focused on naming its animals to reflect their land of origin. Only names from the African languages of Swahili, Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba will be considered for the baby gorilla was born to Amanda and Vip. She has a sister named Calaya.

Contest forms are available at the Zoo, or zoo.org. Forms must be returned by 5 p.m. March 23 to the zoo or to contest co-sponsors Ivar's and Kidd Valley restaurants.
