Metro passengers injured in collision

CASEY MCNERTHNEY
P-I REPORTER

A Metro bus accident Wednesday afternoon in Des Moines sent 14 people to the hospital, including the driver of the Toyota Camry that police say caused the accident by turning in front of the bus.

A bus serving Route 174 was southbound on Pacific Highway South in the HOV lane when the car attempted to turn into the parking lot of a Walgreens in the 23000 block of Pacific Highway South, investigators said. Sonia Tejada, 20, said she was near the back of the bus and was thrown to the front when the driver hit the brakes.

"All the people were yelling and one lady was yelling that her knee was broken," said Tejada, whose own right knee was bruised.

Des Moines Police spokesman Bob Collins said none of the injuries are life threatening.

Metro spokeswoman Linda Thielke said the driver was able to radio passenger injuries and was not taken to the hospital. Metro plans its own investigation after the police investigation is completed, she said.
