Two wounded in West Seattle shooting

By CASEY MCNERTHNEY
P-I REPORTER

A mother and son were shot Tuesday night at a West Seattle house in the 5600 block of Delridge Way Southwest, but police say both are expected to survive.

Police spokeswoman Renee Witt said officers were called about 10:30 p.m. after a woman reported hearing about a dozen shots fired into what officers described as an adjoining basement apartment.

The woman was shot twice in the chest and her 12-year-old son was shot once in the shoulder, Witt said. Both were rushed to Harborview Medical Center.

"We don't know if they were actually the intended targets, or whether there was somebody else," Assistant Police Chief Nick Metz said. "It appears at this time they were the only two in the house."

Witnesses who called police followed a burgundy SUV that police believe one or two suspects fled in, but officers said the witnesses gave up after additional shots were fired. Witt said one other person was shot at, but not hit.

Police found shell casings on the side of the building, but no arrests had been made late Tuesday.

The police gang unit was at the scene. Police dogs and a King County Sheriff's Office helicopter were also aiding in the search for suspects, Metz said.
