OLYMPIA -- Unsolicited e-mail, also known as "spam," would become a thing of the past under a bill introduced by Sen. Bill Finkbeiner, R-Kirkland.

Senate Bill 6568 would require such messages to include special coding in the subject line that enables computer users to filter them out. The proposal also would require senders to include personal information: name, electronic and physical addresses, and a telephone number.

State law prohibits commercial spam with false or misleading information in the subject line, but Finkbeiner said that does little to stop the junk e-mail.

"These advertisements are a headache for anyone who has e-mail," Finkbeiner said in a news release yesterday. "Computer users should be able to know instantly what's spam and what isn't."
