SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES
Cascade Natural Gas has received more than 100 calls from customers who reported smelling gas in their homes in Stanwood, Camano Island and Whidbey Island.
The odor was caused by an overabundance of mercaptan, an odor agent that is deliberately mixed with natural gas so people can smell it in the case of a leak, company spokesman Frank Mensel said last night. Natural gas by itself has no odor.
There is no leak or danger, he said. Mensel said the company has received more than 130 calls. He said the company was investigating all of them and was working to fix the problem.
