The University of Washington Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering is one step closer to completion, thanks to a $14 million gift from its namesake.
Paul Allen announced yesterday his donation toward the construction of the building, scheduled to open summer 2003. It will more than double the area occupied by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering by providing 75,000 square feet of new space.
"The local technology community has really rallied around us," said Ed Lazowska, the Bill & Melinda Gates Chair in Computer Science at the UW and former head of the department. The entire cost of the building is $72 million, with $37 million raised from private donors, including Allen, fellow Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates and local venture capital and software companies, plus $30 million in public financing. Fund-raisers are working to secure the additional money.
