HONOLULU -- Native Hawaiian sovereignty advocates made good on their pledge to return to Iolani Palace the day after taking over the palace grounds.
But this time they didn't chain shut the gates of the historic palace or deny access to employees, tourists or the general public. A protest on Wednesday closed off the palace grounds for about six hours.
Instead, 50 to 75 members and supporters of the group Hawaiian Kingdom Government occupied only one corner of the grounds Thursday.
The group's leader, Mahealani Kahau, and others declined to speak with reporters.
The protesters had vowed to return daily to conduct the business of a sovereign Hawaii.
A state official says the protesters are welcome to peacefully assemble on the palace grounds.
