Feds spell out orca intervention plans
Thursday, April 18, 2002
If federal officials decide to intervene in the case of a young orphan orca hanging out near the Vashon ferry dock, every effort will be made to return her to the wild.
"We intend to keep the animal in the environment," Joe Scordino, National Marine Fisheries Service deputy regional administrator, told 150 people at a public hearing last night.
In a three-step process, the whale would be captured, then moved to a pen in Canadian waters for medical attention. Then she would be moved closer to the waters off Vancouver Island, where her killer whale family group normally lives from June to September.
