State trooper pulls over truck and is overcome by its fumes
Saturday, June 1, 2002
A Washington State Patrol trooper was overcome by fumes yesterday after pulling over a truck that other motorists had complained was emitting a powerful odor.
The smell from an industrial type of turpentine prompted the State Patrol to briefly shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 5 just north of South Michigan Street in Seattle.
Trooper Monica Hunter said several drivers called to report heavy fumes coming from the truck, which was pulling a tanker trailer.
The trooper pulled the truck over just before 11 a.m. It was soon after that the fumes from the tanker made the 37-year-old trooper ill. A cadet riding with her drove the trooper to Harborview Medical Center, where she was treated and reported in satisfactory condition yesterday.
The Seattle Fire Department's hazardous-materials team responded but could find no leak or spill, spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick said. Nevertheless, state troopers directed the truck to Boeing Field for a more thorough inspection, Hunter said.
