KIRKLAND -- Police thought a bank robbery suspect was holed up in a Washington Mutual branch this morning, but after waiting him out for about four hours they went inside and he was gone.

Police spokesman Rex Caldwell said a female employee arrived at the bank at 8 a.m. and the suspect followed her inside and briefly held her hostage. The man told her he was armed, but she did not see a weapon.
Caldwell said the woman did manage to activate a silent alarm and two officers responded, but found the building locked and saw nothing unusual, so they left.
Two more employees arrived, determined something was amiss and alerted police, who returned and saw the first employee, who then managed to escape.
Kirkland police, King County sheriff's deputies and the FBI surrounded the bank on 120th Avenue Northeast in the Totem Lake Mall area, shut down area businesses -- including the mall -- and diverted traffic throughout the standoff.
After about four hours, they went inside and the bank was empty. It was unclear how or when the would-be robber fled.
