Officer's case on hold while in Navy

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

BELLEVUE -- Police Officer Michael Hetle's tour with the Navy has been extended for one more year, prompting the Bellevue Police Department to hold all administrative issues relating to him until his discharge, police Chief Jim Montgomery informed his staff in a memorandum.

In August 2001, Hetle was involved in the controversial shooting death of Nelson Martinez Mendez, an unarmed Guatemalan man and domestic-violence suspect.

An inquest determined that Hetle was justified in firing his weapon, but he has not yet answered questions about the shooting before an internal police department shooting-review board. His tour of duty started in fall 2001, according to the department. He is on unpaid police department leave.
