How the Kingdome might look as it falls

Thursday, March 9, 2000

How the Kingdome might look as it collapses, according to artist renderings released by Controlled Demolition Inc., the company that is engineering the explosives for the dome's March 26 implosion:

Image

Invisible divisions
The dome will be "divided" into two three-wedge sections (highlighted above in yellow) that will collapse in two phases.

Image

Phase one
Explosives will detonate in the roof and columns of the first collection of wedges, triggering the collapse sequence.

Image

Phase two
Seconds later, the same process will be repeated along the remaining wedges, with additional explosives fracturing the structure.

Reduced to rubble
After roughly 17 seconds, the dome will have collapsed onto a "cushion" of preset concrete placed to absorb the impact.
