Vandals destroy seedling trees

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Vandalism at a Vancouver Island forestry research center has destroyed years of work and carries a huge cost, a Forests Ministry official says.

About 2,000 seedlings were ruined at the seed orchard overnight Sunday, Central Saanich police said.

Sgt. Jack Hill said police don't know if the incident is related to a similar crime that took place last Halloween at the Western Forests Products research facility, also located in Central Saanich.

At that time, 3,000 trees were destroyed and a mysterious group calling itself Genetix Goblins claimed responsibility in a statement issued through a California organization.

The group said it was out to destroy trees used for genetic engineering research. But a Forests Ministry spokesman said then that no such trees were used on Crown land.

In Sunday's raid, vandals entered the orchard sometime after 9:30 p.m. and began cutting down or damaging seedling trees, police said.
