This Week's Hot Video: 'Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story'
Vince Vaughn is the underachieving schlub turned team captain to a group of amiable losers that takes on supercilious health club magnate Ben Stiller (under feathered hair and a ridiculous Fu Manchu mustache) for the American dodgeball championship.
Rawson Marshall Thurber's farcical sports spoof may not be original, but it's often shamelessly funny and more clever than I expected.
Not much, mind you, but enough to catch me off guard with a few surprise throws. The laughs come from a script full of non-sequiturs and dead-end metaphors sputtered by a preening Stiller.
Like his misfit heroes, director Thurber aims low and hits his mark in a film that was a surprise hit. Christine Taylor and Rip Torn co-star. DVD extras include two featurettes, director commentary, an alternate ending, deleted/extended scenes and bloopers. 94 minutes. Rated PG-13 for rude and sexual humor and language. (Sean Axmaker)
