This Week's Hot Video: 'In Her Shoes'
This expert comedy-drama -- about two mismatched Philadelphia sisters (Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette) and the grandmother (Shirley MacLaine) they didn't know was still alive -- is well-cast, sympathetically acted and delicately directed by Curtis Hanson.
It is so genuinely touching and funny that it leaps right out of the narrow confines of the family bonding formula. The movie is a terrific showcase for Diaz as a bimbo-ish party girl whose life changes among senior citizens in Florida. Collette gives an incredibly intelligent performance as a workaholic attorney and MacLaine provides a display of grace and style.
Despite some feminist gimmickry and predictable plot turns, Hanson and screenwriter Susannah Grant give the film warmth, irony and finesse. DVD extras include featurettes on shoes, casting and senior actors. 130 minutes. Rated PG-13 for thematic material, language and some sexual content. (William Arnold)
