This Week's Hot Video: 'Pride & Prejudice'

The latest movie version of Jane Austen's classic early-19th-century novel of romance is a delightful mixture of social commentary, exuberant comedy and gorgeous views of the English countryside and its aristocratic homes.

Keira Knightley shines -- and won a best actress Oscar nomination -- in her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet, Austen's heroine. She's the oldest of five girls whose mother is endlessly scheming to marry them off before the family loses its modest means.

Matthew Macfadyen plays the upper-class, and misunderstood, Mr. Darcy. DVD featurettes include a glimpse of the modern sensibilities Austen set forth in her fiction nearly two centuries ago. The disc also offers a look at the colorful family at the center of the story and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the film's grand dance ball, along with commentary from director Joe Wright. 128 minutes. Rated PG for some mild thematic elements. (P-I staff)
