This Week's Hot Video: 'Jarhead'

Sam Mendes' powerful film version of Anthony Swofford's Gulf War memoir -- which follows a grunt recruit (Jake Gyllenhaal) through Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm -- is a sobering experience that measures the human cost of war less in terms of battlefield statistics than its degenerative psychological ripple effect on a generation and a society.

It's mostly about the ordeal of waiting in the desert for something to happen, the daily grind of training and surviving in an insensitive, sexually frustrated, macho world. The war itself comes and goes in a flash.

With Jamie Foxx, Peter Sarsgaard and Chris Cooper. Both one- and two-disc DVDs include deleted scenes and commentary tracks; the second disc includes video diaries, background on Marine extras and interviews about Marines returning to civilian life. 115 minutes. Rated R for pervasive language, some violent images and strong sexual content. (William Arnold)
