This Week's Hot Video: 'Memoirs of a Geisha'

MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA

Rob Marshall's film version of Arthur Goldman's best-selling novel about the rise of a star geisha in pre-World War II Japan is a fairly conventional historical romance. It's elevated by a trio of delicious star performances, sumptuous production values (it won Oscars for art direction, costumes and cinematography) and a sweeping John Williams score with cello solos by Yo-Yo Ma. It's the saga of Sayuri (Ziyi Zhang), who is sold as a young girl by her impoverished parents to be trained as a geisha and eventually becomes the rival of the area's top geisha, the shrewish Hatsumomo (Gong Li). With Michelle Yeoh and Ken Watanabe. The two-disc DVD's extras include commentary by Marshall and choreographer John DeLuca, nine featurettes on the making of the film and two on the histories of geishas and of sumo wrestling. 144 minutes. Rated PG-13 for mature subject matter and some sexual content. (William Arnold)
