This Week's Hot Video: 'The Pink Panther'
Steve Martin steps into the Inspector Clouseau role in this faithful revival of the 43-year-old comedy franchise and nails it with his most inventive and funny performance since "Bowfinger."
He has all the vanity and abrasive stupidity the character requires -- and then some. A prequel to the original story, the film tells of how, with devious intentions, Clouseau's nemesis, Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Kevin Kline), first recruits the most incompetent gendarme in France to head an investigation into the theft of the Pink Panther diamond.
But the joke is that the new inspector -- despite his colossal arrogance, ineptitude and propensity to unleash a chain reaction of devastation every time he turns around -- somehow magically comes out on top of virtually every situation. The requisite dash of cheesecake is nicely supplied by Beyoncé Knowles.
92 minutes. Rated PG for occasional crude and suggestive humor and language. (William Arnold)
