This Week's Hot Video: 'The Lake House'
The old-fashioned, star-crossed, movie-star romance is pretty much a dead genre in today's Hollywood. But romance is front and center in "The Lake House," a reasonably straightforward weepie that reunites the "Speed" team of Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves -- and the sheer novelty helps make the film seem a pleasant and refreshing change of pace.
An Americanized remake of the South Korean film "Siworae," it tells the tale of a lonely doctor (Bullock) and a troubled architect (Reeves) who live in the Chicago-area lake house, but two years apart. Gradually, they discover they live in two time zones and begin to correspond on a daily basis. As they learn about each other's lives, they fall in love.
The script is clever and Argentine director Alejandro Agresti displays a light touch and original eye and gets underplayed performances from his stars. 108 minutes. Rated PG for some language and a disturbing image. (William Arnold)
