This Week's Hot Video: 'Prairie Home Companion'

Robert Altman's frothy film exists in a parallel universe to Garrison Keillor's popular show, fictionalized as a local broadcast about to be axed by its new corporate owner. Many of the true program's characters are given flesh.

Guy Noir (Kevin Kline) runs security, cowboys Dusty and Lefty (Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly) become a rough, occasionally rude singing act. The Johnson Sisters (Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin) reminisce about their days on the road for the benefit of a brooding teen daughter (Lindsay Lohan).

Keillor, who co-wrote the script, portrays himself as a cracker-barrel eccentric, aloof and absent-minded. Longtime familiarity with the show impedes the film's conceits. The DVD includes extended versions of the musical numbers and gag commercials, a making-of featurette and Altman and Kline team up for commentary. 105 minutes. Rated PG-13 for risque humor.
