This Week's Hot Video: 'Over the Hedge'
A snappy script and energetic pacing overcome a slim story in the animated "prequel" to the Michael Fry and T Lewis newspaper comic strip of woodland buddies confronting the absurdities of suburbia.
The irresistible force of streetwise raccoon RJ (voiced by a woundup Bruce Willis) collides with the implacable caution of Vern the turtle (Garry Shandling, with a perfect listless whine) after the animals wake from hibernation to find their forest foraging grounds paved over and built up in tract homes by an invading army of "freaky pink primates."
Also features the voices of Steve Carell, Wanda Sykes, William Shatner, Nick Nolte, Thomas Haden Church, Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara.
The DVD includes a short cartoon starring Carell's manic squirrel character and a spoof infomercial featuring the movie's pest-control technician. 87 minutes. Rated PG for some rude humor and mild comic action. (Sean Axmaker)
