Army has found major flaws in Stryker vehicles, paper reports

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

A classified Army study says the Stryker vehicle being used by Fort Lewis-based troops in Iraq has design flaws, maintenance problems and an unexpected risk from rocket-propelled grenades, The Washington Post reported today.

The Stryker, which has been used in northern Iraq since October 2003, has problems with its armor, weapons systems and seat belts, according to the Dec. 21 study obtained by the newspaper.

The report says armor installed on Strykers in Kuwait to protect against insurgent attacks is so heavy that tire pressure must be checked three times daily. The Post reported that the Army said tire and wheel assemblies must be replaced daily and that the engine and transmission are not designed to carry the extra armor.

The armor also protects against only half of the grenades used against the vehicles, the Post said.
