What is Scotch broom?

Otherwise known as Cytisus scoparius, it's a shrub common to the Pacific Northwest and northern California where it can spread like weeds across open land. It looks like a mass of nearly leafless, wandlike green stems that can reach heights of nearly 10 feet. During the spring and early summer, it sports small yellow flowers.

Scotch broom has possible but unproven medicinal applications, including treating congestive heart failure. Consideredly slightly toxic, it can cause diarrhea, nausea and vomiting if consumed; no "safe" dose has been established.
