Beacon Hill School, shown at left in 1946, has been home to El Centro de la Raza for 25 years. In 1972, the deserted building was occupied by community activists, who set up a variety of programs for low-income Seattle residents.

This 1953 photo shows the 12th Avenue South bridge and the Marine Hospital in the distance. The hospital, on the north end of Beacon Hill, is now known as Pacific Medical Center and Clinics.
