Things to do while you're here
If you're visiting, try the following:
- See old stuff: Visit the Kitsap County Historical Society Museum in the former Seafirst building, 280 4th St., between Pacific and Washington avenues. Turn-of-the-century Navy artifacts, old photos, storefront displays. Information: 360-479-6226.
- Concerts: Four gigs remain of the 10th Annual Free Summer Concert Series on the Waterfront, 6 to 8 p.m. every Friday through Aug. 31 on Bremerton's Boardwalk pier. Information: 360-377-3041. From Seattle at 5:30 p.m. catch the new M/V Chinook for a high-speed ride through Rich Passage, then walk a couple hundred feet to the concert on the nearby boardwalk.

- Tour the USS Turner Joy: Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sept. 30, tour this retired Pacific Fleet destroyer, built in Seattle and commissioned in 1959. Adults $6, seniors $5, children 5-12 $4. Information: 360-792-2457.
- Take a boat ride: From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through September. (Weekends only October, November, March and April, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) Learn what's where on a tour of Bremerton's seascape via Kitsap Harbor Tours. Adults $8.50, seniors $7.50, children 5-12 $5.50. Information: 360-377-8924. Or for just $1.10 one way (free on weekends through August) ride the Horluck ferries across Sinclair Inlet to Port Orchard.
- Play golf: Choose among the Bremerton Park Department's two municipal Gold Mountain Golf Complex courses (Cascade or Olympic) 360-415-5432, or privately owned McCormick Woods open to the public in nearby Port Orchard, 800-323-0130.
- See some gnarled trees: Dan Robinson's bonsai beauties are in his Elandan Gardens on state Route 16 in Gorst. From Seattle, take the Bremerton ferry from Colman Dock. From the Bremerton dock, go left on Burwell Street through town to Callow Avenue. Turn left on Callow, pass the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and merge onto the state Route 3 freeway into Gorst. Stay in the left lane and follow the signs onto state Route 16 toward Port Orchard. Once on state Route 16, take the U-turn route and double back but move quickly to the right lane because Elandan Gardens is right there. Watch for its big sign. The garden and adjacent antique shop are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission to the garden is $5; $1 for children 6 to 12; free for children under 6. Information: 360-373-8260.
