History and background on Federal Way
Federal Way Area Expands

One of the fastest-growing areas in Washington State is Federal Way on Highway 99 between Seattle and Tacoma.

More than 3-1/2 million dollars have been invested in the Federal Shopping Way, and four housing developments, two churches and more than 50 businesses have sprung up.

The ultra-modern shopping center, developed by Federal Old Line Insurance, covers more than 100,000 square feet with everything from a bowling alley to a miniature farm, and serves as a focal point for expanding construction in every direction.

Covered walks
It features covered walkways between each building and parking facilities for more than 1,500 automobiles; hardware, grocery and clothing stores; a roller skating arena and insurance, real estate, medical and dental offices.

Planned for completion this fall are a department store, bank, theater, sporting goods shop and a military store.

Housing developments growing from the shopping center include Soundcrest, built by United Construction Co., Tacoma. Some 50 homes are under construction with 30 sold before completion. Another 60-home development is planned for fall.

Another is North Federal Way Aquacene Homes, built by View Home Builders, Inc., on a 25-acre tract north of Federal Way High School.

77,000 by '60
The present population of 11,000 is expected to grow to 77,000 by 1960. To meet the increasing number of children, 73 classrooms will be added to the grade, junior high and senior high schools.

Civic organizations have played a large part in developing the area, such as Federal Way Lions Club, which is planning for a recreational park on a 20-acre tract west of Federal Way High School; Robert Paul Youngchild Post, American Legion; Greater Federal Way Chamber of Commerce, and Federal Way Jaycees.
