July 1, 1940, was a day of celebration: the opening of the first Narrows Bridge. The bridge wobbled and toppled in high winds just four months later, causing it to be dubbed "Galloping Gertie."

Fishing, logging and farming lured many early residents to Gig Harbor. A fishing crew aboard the Spokane, built in 1916, posed for the photo above. Between 1912 and 1930, more than 140 wooden boats -- purse seiners and pleasure craft -- were built in Gig Harbor.
