The town's former elementary school is shown in about 1913. Today's Index residents are faced with the decision of continuing to operate its minuscule local school, housed in a newer structure, or bowing to efficiency by closing it and joining a bigger district.

Main Street was, and still is, the hub of Index, shown above in about 1912. The Pickett Historical Museum showcases photos of pioneer photographer Lee Pickett and other exhibits about Index.

The Index post office was established in a corner of an inn owned by town founder Amos Gunn. He built a small office building for the post office and his real estate business in 1899. His daughter, Persis, became postmistress and is pictured on the porch, above.
