Things to do while you're here

Originally published Saturday, March 1, 1997

If you're visiting, check out these spots:

  • Kirkland Library Sculpture Gallery presents rotating exhibits of art and sculpture. Some sculpture is presented outside the library in a garden-like setting and currently features cast bronze figures. 308 Kirkland Ave.

  • Kirkland Arts Center, in the historic Peter Kirk Building, offers art classes, an art lecture series, rotating shows, studio space and more. Once a hippie haven attracting the likes of writer Tom Robbins and others, the center is one of Kirkland's best-kept secrets. 620 Market St.; (206) 822-7161 for information.

  • Woodmark Hotel. Where else can you say you slept in the same room visited by ex-Beatle Paul McCartney? The luxury hotel -- the only one on Lake Washington -- also allows guests to fix their own midnight snacks in the kitchen. Rates: $150 to $1,000 a night. 1200 Carillon Point; (206) 822-3700.

  • Waverly Beach Park is one of Kirkland's best spots for a picnic or sunbathing. Away from cars, the lakefront park is a tree-studded sanctuary with sweeping views of Lake Washington. Fishing docks, too. Enter near Sixth Street West and Waverly Way.
