La Conner
Things to do

  • Breakfast at the Calico Cupboard, a favorite with locals since 1981. From Grandma's Hotcakes to the Smoked Salmon Scramble, the Cupboard is hard to beat for a morning indulgence. 720 S. First St., 360-466-4451. Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

  • La Conner has some big museums for a small town. Visit the Museum of Northwest Art for a look at some of the region's finest artists, including Morris Graves and Guy Anderson. The only art museum between Bellingham and Seattle, it was founded in 1981. 121 S. First St., 360-466-4446. To learn about the pioneers of the Skagit Valley, stop in at the Skagit County Historical Museum, complete with research library, farm equipment exhibits and a sweeping hilltop view. 501 S. Fourth St. 360-466-3365.

  • Locals love the burgers at the La Conner Tavern. They come loaded, and be forewarned: the "Tiny Burger" is meant as a joke, like calling a bald man "Curly". This popular pub also boasts great views of the Swinomish Channel. 702 S. First St. 360-466-9932

  • Walk. It's not far to anywhere in La Conner, and being a pedestrian in this quaint town is pure pleasure. Avoid tulip season if you don't like crowds. Otherwise, feel free to stroll along First Street, pop into the art galleries and shops, watch the boat traffic and soak up the small-town charm.

  • The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, of course, is always a colorful treat. This year, the festival takes place from April 2-18. Every spring, the fields surrounding La Conner become blanketed with brilliant tulips and daffodils. No matter how pretty, please don't pick. You can buy flowers from roadside vendors. For more information, call the festival office in Mount Vernon, 360-428-5959
