If you're visiting, check out these spots:

  • Discovery Park is Seattle's largest park and arguably its most important nature preserve. Seven miles of trails take visitors through meadows and atop sand dunes, including dramatic views of the Sound and the Olympics. At 534 acres, it is a sanctuary for visitors and home to a wide variety of birds, plants and animals. 3801 W. Government Way. Call 206-386-4236 for information about bird-watching tours, visitor center or nature walks.

  • West Point Lighthouse, built in 1881, is the oldest lighthouse in the area. Walking trails descend to two miles of beach and the lighthouse from Discovery Park. Warning: The expanded West Point Sewage Treatment Plant dominates the beach.
