For 10 years, Derek Hinds, 12, and his mom have rented the oldest house in King County still on its original foundation. The Newcastle historical landmark, built in the 1870s, is known as the Baima house and is the last surviving residence connected to the Pacific Coast Coal Co.

Milt Swanson has lived in Newcastle for 80 years. On part of his property is the Coal Creak Trail, which is part of the Cougar Mountain Park trail system. Swanson worked in the mines until 1962.
