Statistics don't tell whole story about population mix

Originally published Saturday, May 23, 1998

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

Pie chart showing ethnic makeup of populationThe city, settled by Norwegian immigrants, is overwhelmingly white. Minority populations are less than 10 percent, according to the 1990 census, but that figure doesn't tell the whole story. Adjacent to the city is the Suquamish Indian Reservation, with its population of 313 on 7,600 acres, according to the Suquamish Tribe.

Poulsbo Elementary School, which serves most of the city, reflects the diversity of the city: 562 white children, 12 blacks, 12 American Indians, 17 Asians, and 20 Hispanics.

The elementary school is clustered with North Kitsap High School and Poulsbo Junior High School in an 83.7-acre educational park. The high school and junior high draw from far wider areas than just Poulsbo.
