If you're visiting, check out these spots:
- The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park is a monument to the life and work of the slain civil rights leader. Six curving terraces are built into the hillside, offering views across Rainier Valley. At the foot is a black granite sculpture and fountain created by the late Seattle artist Robert Kelly. Brass plaques lining the fountain and courtyard tell the story of King's life and work. At the corner of Martin Luther King, Jr. Way and South Walker Street.
- Atlantic Street Center has been helping Rainier Valley families since 1910. The center, run by Executive Director David Okimoto, offers adolescent services, counseling, family parenting classes, English classes and many after-school programs. 2103 S. Atlantic St. Info: 206-329-2050.
- Seattle Tennis Center is run by the city Parks Department and offers 10 indoor and four outdoor courts, as well as lessons and league play. The city charges $14 for singles play and $18 for doubles for 1 hour and 15 minutes. A yearly reservation card also is available for $27, allowing players to make a court reservation up to six days in advance. - Mutual Fish Co. is well known by shoppers and restaurant owners who have been coming for years for fresh seafood, including live crawfish, crabs, oysters, clams and geoducks. 2335 Rainier Ave. S.
- Borracchini's Bakery and Mediterranean Market is known for its wedding and birthday cakes and pastries. It also has a fine Italian deli and wine selection, and an assortment of party goods. During the summer it sells 80 to 100 wedding cakes a weekend and up to 500 birthday cakes. 2307 Rainier Ave. S.
