Ravenna
Things to do while you're here
If you're visiting, check out these spots:
- Ravenna Park is one of those hidden little nooks that can be fully appreciated only on foot. Informal trails wind through a steep, forested ravine, which helps replenish Ravenna Creek with spring water and runoff. Though its old-growth was logged, the park still has redwoods, Pacific yews and some big fir trees. This is not an off-leash dog run, but many residents and visitors treat it as such. Also favored by joggers, hardy transients and street kids from the University District.
- Calvary Catholic Cemetery is well into its second century of use. Almost 40,000 people are buried at the hillside cemetery, including a number of Seattle pioneers and early day businessmen, including Col. Alden Blethen, founder of The Seattle Times. The manicured grounds are open to the public from daylight to dusk. Located at 5041 35th Ave. N.E..
- Queen Mary tearoom is a cozy little breakfast and lunch nook known for fresh-baked treats. A formal afternoon tea is served from 2 to 5 p.m. daily. A three-tier tray is heaped with scones, tea cakes, lemon curd tarts, sugar cookies and much more. All of it is baked by Elizabeth, "Queen Mum,'' and served by her daughter Mary. Located at 2912 N.E. 55th St.
- Guido's Pizza makes a very respectable pie. The Ravenna store -- a whisker better than Guido's at Green Lake -- is a hangout for pizza lovers, who come for custom pies and the scene, which includes guys in suits, kids in backpacks and dogs tied up outside. Try the spicy eggplant. Located at 2108 N.E. 65th St.
