Shaw Island
Things to do while you're here
- Shaw Island Historical Museum -- The rustic museum, constructed with logs from the original post office on Shaw, sits across the street from The Little Red School House and next door to the small island library. Outside is an old reef netter, its green and red paint peeling. Inside are photos of pioneering families, marine and agricultural artifacts and pestles, scrapers and arrowheads of Indian tribes that once used Shaw as a fishing camp, digging clams to trade all the way to Montana. Labels are done in beautiful calligraphy. On Blind Bay Road, about two miles from the ferry landing. Hours are Tuesday, 2 p.m.-4 p.m.; Thursday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m.-noon and 2 p.m.-4 p.m.
- The Little Portion Store -- Run by the Franciscan nuns, the quaint store at the Shaw ferry landing stocks not only staples but a fine selection of wines and handcrafted goods and foods made on-island. That includes the herbal vinegars, teas, spices and serious hot mustard made by nuns at Our Lady of the Rock Priory.
- Shaw Island County Park -- Island guides call this 64-acre getaway on Indian Cove an island paradise, with one of the best beaches in the San Juans and views to kill for. There is a picnic pavilion, outhouse privies and picnic tables scattered around, and 12 primitive campsites, many overlooking the water. Get there early if you plan to camp. If you don't get a spot, you'll have to catch the next ferry out. There are no other public overnight facilities
