Things to do while you're here

  • Take a tour. The historic D.O. Pearson House and Stanwood Area History Museum at 27112 102nd Ave. N.W. are open 2 p.m. through 5 p.m. Sundays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays. For information call 360-629-2110.

  • Browse through shops and stop for a bite. Try the lefse and the freshly pickled herring and the lingon-berry jam (but not all together!) at the Scandia Bakery and Lefse Factory, 8706 271st St. N.W.

Next door is the Snow Goose bookstore -- look for the smiling pen-and-ink faces on the "recommended" cards, then look around the store to find the same faces on store owners Chris Satterlund and Kristine Kaufman. Magazine junkies will find a prime selection of magazines and newspapers, as well as books and gifts, at Port Susan Books and News in the Stanwood-Camano Village Shopping Center on Route 532.

  • Admire art glass. The Pilchuck School is generally closed to visitors, but does hold an open house one day each year. This year it's scheduled for Aug. 1. Tickets are $15 and tend to sell out early. Call 206-621-8422.

  • Applaud the wheelchair drill teamand enjoy other Stanwood specialties at the annual summer Stanwood-Camano Parade. For information call the Stanwood Chamber of Commerce at 360-929-STAN.
