Garden Book: 'Gardening With Soul'

By Gaylah Balter (Learning Tree, 146 pages, $18)

First let me say you may have a hard time finding this softcover book in bookstores. It is self-published by a local author who is passionate about her message.

Gaylah Balter wants you to understand the connection between gardening and spiritual nourishment. She preaches feng shui basics for garden and landscape but includes hundreds of garden facts, tips and bits of wisdom.

This thin book starts with characteristics of a soulful garden and ends with how to become an Earth steward, but in between are lists of good companion plants, butterfly-attracting plants and some new ways to look at your weeds.

There also is an excellent resource directory at the back of the book. Don't expect any colorful photographs to inspire you to gardening greatness, but do expect a book that will help you realize that gardening is all about relaxing, healing the Earth and creating beauty all around you. To order direct: gaylahbalter@earhlink.net.
