Panic in Puyallup

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD

When Puyallup School District officials announced they would enforce an existing policy banning Halloween festivities, they seemed to be on solid if stolid ground. Costumes and parties distract from important schoolwork, kids who can't afford costumes might feel left out and some younger kids might get scared.

But then came the Wiccan business.

A memo went out to principals saying that they "should not tolerate such inappropriate stereotyping (images such as witches on flying brooms, stirring caldrons, casting spells or with long noses and pointed hats)," because it might offend those for whom Halloween is a religious holiday -- Wiccans.

A quick creep across the Web shows that Wiccans and sundry occultists are offended, all right -- by the school district's ban.

At iamawitch.com, for example, it was tabbed "The Grinch that stole Halloween."

Despite a public appeal Monday night, school officials said the ban stands and that kids who show up in costumes may be sent home.

Now that's scary.
