Seattle Mobility: Streetcar synergy?

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD

Seattle City Councilman Richard Conlin has hit on a sensible idea. If the city is to build a new streetcar line in addition to the existing George Benson Waterfront Streetcar, shouldn't we look hard for any prospect of linking the two?

Mayor Greg Nickels has pushed hard for the construction of a South Lake Union streetcar that would run from the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center on Fairview Avenue North to Westlake Center. The waterfront streetcar now runs from the International District, down to Alaskan Way and then along the waterfront to just past the base of Broad Street.

The waterfront line is threatened by the proposed Seattle Art Museum sculpture park and the hoped-for reconstruction of the Alaskan Way Viaduct and the seawall. SAM officials want the streetcar's maintenance facility removed, and the viaduct and seawall construction could block operations on the line for up to a decade. There have been suggestions that the line be temporarily relocated to Western, First, Third or Fifth avenues.

Conlin, chairman of the council's Transportation Committee, wondered aloud if there isn't a way to tie the waterfront system to the proposed South Lake Union route. It's a good question, deserving of a considered answer, and one of a dozen Conlin asked the Seattle Department of Transportation to deliver by June 1.
