Daily No On I-912: Clearing the air

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD

A few voices claim environmental grounds for supporting Initiative 912, the proposed repeal of this year's gas tax legislation. In essence, they hold that with bad enough air and enough commuters stuck in traffic, growth will wither -- with the plants, we suppose.

But the real news is that the sometimes-fractious environmental community is thoughtfully united in saying no to I-912. From the Washington Conservation Voters to the Sierra Club and People for Puget Sound, the message is clear. I-912 hurts the environment, people and the economy.

Clifford Traisman, an environmental lobbyist helping to lead the No on 912 campaign, said the tax supports highway and bridge projects that will improve safety and relieve congestion. Over the long run, congestion's negative economic effects would hurt environmental protections, always an immediate target of conservatives in a weak economy.

There's only one safe vote, for people, the air and the rest of the environment: No on I-912.
