Middle East: Alone again
The United States is again alone in its support of Israel's "disproportionate use of force." At the United Nations Thursday, the United States was the only nation to vote against a resolution that called on Israel and the Palestinians to "take immediate steps to create the necessary condition for the resumption of negotiation and restarting the peace process."
It urged all parties to help alleviate the "dire humanitarian situation" faced by Palestinians.
But U.N. Ambassador John Bolton called the resolution "unbalanced." He said this resolution "would have exacerbated tensions in the region."
Make no mistake: This resolution was not perfect. But we think it should have been a first draft. The world community can and should condemn the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers as well as the military incursions into Lebanon and Gaza. The threat of a wider war is worth averting
We even remember the diplomatic language of old, a unified call for "restraint" by all sides.
That notion gave the United States at least the prospect of entering the fray as an honest broker. We could talk to all of the parties and at least make the case for peace. Nowadays we can't even agree on a resolution that makes that case.
