P-I Endorsement: Oemig for Senate

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD

Almost as stunning as his vote change on the gay civil rights bill was Republican Sen. Bill Finkbeiner's announcement that he was leaving the state Senate.

That left big shoes to fill in the 45th District, but its constituents don't lack candidates to fill them.

Incumbent Republican Rep. Toby Nixon left the House to run for Finkbeiner's spot. But there was already a contender. Democrat Eric Oemig, a former Microsoft engineer and money manager, announced in January that he would take on Finkbeiner. Nixon offers a solid but less formidable opponent.

Nixon is a hard-working legislator who can work across the aisle, and deserves credit for his efforts on open government. But he simply votes against the district's interests on too many important issues, including transportation, school funding and gay civil rights.

And Senate Democrats need a functional majority to make the kind of progress the state needs on education, transportation and health care.

Oemig, former host of the cable television show "Moral Politics," offers a plainspoken, business-sense approach. "Our tax dollars should be spend on programs that return more value to families and businesses than we pay in," he says. He sees spending on education, transportation and health care as an investment, that's expected to produce a return. "Investment lowers eventual costs," he says.

A vote for Oemig is a sound investment for the 45th District.
