Nightclub Rules: Music for the ages

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD

Well hells bells, it looks like folks in Olympia have come to their senses and left our all-ages music scene alone.

For those who missed the story, here's what was going on: An initial draft of a proposal issued by the Density Work Group (working with the Washington State Liquor Control Board) aimed to create a new classification liquor permit especially for nightclubs. The group also included a provision in there banning anyone under the age of 21 from entering such establishments, which meant no more all-ages shows at local clubs. Seattle, though, has its own ordinances regarding such shows and they work just fine, thank you very much.

So after meeting with the Seattle Nightlife and Music Association at least twice, the Density Work Group came to its senses, nixing the 21+ provision. Instead, what the proposed bill asks for is that minors be allowed only in club "areas where no alcohol is served." Hallelujah.
