Abortion: Insulting women

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD

When it comes to eroding women's rights, why is it that the more backward a bill is, the further it seems to get? Case in point: South Carolina lawmakers are considering a bill that would force women seeking abortions to get ultrasounds, and that they must "certify in writing" that they're reviewed the images before they can get an abortion. Ten more states (not ours) are considering similar laws.

We're told that the bill's supporters think, gosh, women should have all the info necessary before making such a weighty decision. We're going to call B.S. on that. It's not like the state doesn't already have laws regulating abortions. The bill's main sponsor, Rep. F. Gregory Delleney Jr., champions legislation that would amend the state's code of law to include "a child in utero," (though certainly not to "infringe" on a woman's right to abortion) as a person and another bill asking that marriage between a man and woman be the "only lawful domestic union that is valid or recognized."

Forcing a woman to get a pricey ultrasound in order to manipulate her decision-making process is disrespectful and unconscionable. And to do it under the guise of concern for women is just insulting.
