Jim Doerty has better experience for Superior Court

Wednesday, September 13, 2000

POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD

In real estate, it's location, location, location. In judging -- with some exceptions -- it's experience, experience, experience. In this regard, incumbent Jim Doerty outweighs Linda Thompson for Position 25 on King County Superior Court.

Unlike other contests this year, both candidates have sat in judgment of others, a definite plus in view of the court's regrettably high turnover.

Before his appointment in January, Doerty spent five years as one of King County's six family law commissioners, presiding over child abuse and neglect cases. Thompson has been a district court judge since 1996.

While each would be competent in the job, Doerty is the better choice because his portfolio covers more ground. He has been a major player in child welfare issues as a commissioner and in pro bono work. Earlier, he served the public defender's office as trial lawyer and deputy director.

He is rated "exceptionally well-qualified" by the King County Bar Association. Thompson, whose prior work was in civil litigation, was deemed "adequate."
