Seattle's Dave Messenheimer and Steilacoom's Heidi Grimm captured the men's and women's overall titles in the sixth annual Benaroya Research Institute Triathlon at Seafair on Sunday at Seward Park.

A record field of 1,900 athletes competed in Sunday's "sprint distance" triathlon, which featured a half-mile swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run.

Messenheimer, 26, finished in 57.33 to edge Chris Tremonte of Redmond, who clocked 59:43. Michael Gordon of Kirkland finished third in 1:00.10.

Messenheimer completed his swim in 9:42, his bike ride in 29:41 and his run in 16:18.

Messenheimer's total time established a course record, breaking the old mark of 57:59 set in 2002 by Bellingham's Jeremiah Mushen.

The victory was also Messenheimer's second in the event. He also won in 2004. He finished second last year.

Grimm, 39, clocked 1:02.35 to defeat Erin Ford of The Dalles, Ore., by more than a minute. Ford finished in 1:03.46. Seattle's Tracy Orcutt was third in 1:06.07.

Grimm's splits included an 11:27 swim, a 30:56 bike ride and an 18:07 run.

Grimm's time also established a women's course record, breaking the old mark set by Jenny Marine of Bend, Ore., in 2004 (1:04.39).
